2015 Gwangju Universiade Appoints Event Coordinators for 21 Sports
  2015 Gwangju Universiade Appoints Event Coordinators for 21 Sports - Total of 45 experts to offer event-specific advice on venues, facilities and management   On April 30th, the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) appointed event coordinators for each of the 21 different sports which will be staged in the Universiade, as part of the ongoing preparatory processes.   The total of 45 specialists, each expert in one of the Universiade’s various sporting disciplines, will give working-level advice on issues such as event management and facilities, and play a pivotal role for coordinating and developing relationships between the GUOC and the respective individual sporting organizations. With the relevant coordinators’ assistance, the GUOC will amend the draft of the CPM, and check the condition of each venue before deciding on any necessary renovations. A detail-specific back-up plan on each competition management process will be set up; so that if any event venues are considered too far from the center or in poor condition, then alternatives will be available.   The Gwangju Summer Universiade takes place in Gwangju in July 2015, and will feature the 13 compulsory Universiade sports including athletics, basketball, fencing, football, and gymnastics alongside 8 optional sports, which include badminton, taekwondo, golf, handball, archery, and baseball. Around 20,000 athletes from 170 nations are expected to participate in the Universiade. Meanwhile at the appointment ceremony for the new sports coordinators, the GUOC conferred a letter of appointment to each of the 45 specialists, and also held a briefing session on current preparations and collaborations. At the ceremony, Cho Jae-gi, professor at Donga University, and former General Secretary of the Korean Olympic Committee, gave a lecture on the role of sports coordinators.    “In other to host the Universiade successfully, we will make great efforts to prepare the game schedule and programs steadily and meticulously, step by step with the specialist sports coordinators,” said a GUOC officer.   < Photograph >Sports experts appointed as 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade event coordinators expressed fighting spirit for the success of the Universiade, on April 30th.   – AIPS President Gianni Merlo, at the International Sports Diplomacy Symposium, April 27th The 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade Organizing Committee (Chairperson Jung Ui-hwa) and Korea Sport Diplomacy Forum (Chairperson Park Gyeong-jin) co-hosted the International Sports Diplomacy Symposium at the Ramada Plaza Hotel, Gwangju on April 27th.   Gianni Merlo, the President of AIPS (International Sports Press Association), delivered the keynote address at the symposium. He said that “the Universiade would be a great opportunity to introduce the host city and its culture. Through sports events, journalists all around the world gather together and share the cultural experiences. Therefore continuous efforts on organizing a sporting event and attaining interest of media are crucial.”    Following this, AIPS Secretary General Roslyn Morris gave a speech on the topic of “the role of international sports media and the university sports movement in fostering peace and harmony through sport and education”, and placed significant emphasis on the ‘Peaceversiade’, which is a major part of the 2015 Gwangju Universiade promotion. Secretary General Morris emphasized that “University Sports have immensely contributed to world peace and harmony. Through sports young adults in disputed regions can harmonize together, understand the differences and overcome social backgrounds.”   The symposium featured a video-call from two students, from Uganda and Moldova, who had participated in the young journalist program in Shenzhen Universiade last year. They talked of how students from all over the world had shared their experiences, culture and friendships, through sports.   Professor Gwon Sun-yong of Seoul National University talked on the topic of the role and tasks of mega-sports events and international sports journalism, and stressed that “In other to make mega sports events a success, the media play a huge role.
